What Is The Tony Award?

The Tony Award is a prestigious annual award for achievement in live American theatre. Tony Awards are often used to reward excellence in Broadway productions but that’s not always the case. They can be awarded to both production teams and individuals for their achievements; as an example, when Patti LuPone won for Evita in 1982, it was actually considered a Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role rather than being strictly considered on how good her performance was as a part of a production. The awards are presented by The Broadway League and they do have voting guidelines but there’s no rule against outside participation if you feel passionately about one show or performer versus another. How many Tony Awards are given out each year? There’s no fixed number; only four were given out in 1948, but as many as 10 have been handed out in recent years. However, most years only see between six and eight winners announced during Tony Awards season which typically begins at least a month before The Tonys themselves take place. So who has won Tony Awards? A partial list would include Denzel Washington, Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin, Ian McKellen, Liza Minnelli and Helen Mirren among countless others. What is A Strange Loop?: A Strange Loop was nominated for best musical (among other awards) at last year's Tony Awards and has already received critical acclaim for its thoughtful approach to complex issues. The story follows two main characters: Margie who lives with her parents in Wisconsin and Bill who runs a restaurant with his husband near Chicago.

An Important Note on the Tonys And the Oscars

In a strange loop that serves as a reminder of just how fickle fame can be, Broadway's biggest night—which doesn't even air on TV—is getting shunted to Sunday morning. It's hard to blame CBS for its late-night timing announcement; Lethal Weapon is one of its most popular shows and it needs time to broadcast ads. The network also has a new fall lineup on tap, with The Neighborhood premiering Monday at 8:30 p.m., so it would be smart to not encroach upon that premiere by giving away all those viewers who usually just watch local news. But here's hoping Oscar producers are paying attention and realize that such potentially embarrassing setbacks might happen in 2024. This year, both awards show aired on ABC, which was able to go up against each other without competing with itself. That will probably never happen again. When are the tony awards 2022? They're going head-to-head in a little over a month, but right now there's no reason to think they'll move off their respective Sundays in 2019 or 2020 either. A lot could change between now and then though... if an unforeseen opportunity arises for one or both shows to capitalize on an opportunity for ratings dominance (perhaps when NBC gives up football rights), or if social media continues causing big live events like these headaches... anything could happen... it's entertainment after all. So don't take anything for granted.

Best Play

A Strange Loop (which is about a strange loop; everyone knows how much I love strange loops) will win Best Play. I also expect musicals to do well on Broadway in 2022, and Disney to lead the pack. The Disney phenomenon will, of course, be complete with Pirates of Penzance , which was initially offered to La Jolla Playhouse and eventually went to New York's MTC after Michael Mayer proved he could revive Les Miz at Lincoln Center. By far, though, I'm most excited for Ariana DeBose as Celie Johnson in The Color Purple . It has all my favorite things: sequels, African-American history references (i.e., women's suffrage), as well as some good old-fashioned story arc: tragedy to triumph. In short, it’s exactly what I want from Broadway. Now, who wants to go see Patti LuPone play Carlotta Campion again? Oh wait—I forgot! That already happened back in 2010 when she played Norma Desmond. Oops! Maybe next time...and hopefully that next time won't take another 8 years! ~~ Editor's Note: Click here to read our full review of A Strange Loop. ~~ #TonyAwards2022 #TonyAwards #CelieJohnson #TheColorPurple #ArianaDeBose #pattilupone #StrangeLoopBroadway

The story explores their very different worldviews and personalities through incredible song selections from a brilliant orchestra led by Broadway legend Doug Besterman and choral arrangements from Michael Starobin. This show looks like it is going to be an early favorite for next year's Tony Award for

Ariana DeBose (Waitress), Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time), Corey Cott (Pretty Woman) and Will Swenson (Newsies) have been announced as hosts of next year’s Tony Awards taking place on June 11th 2022 at Radio City Music Hall live on CBS. Recently Stephen Colbert was hosting the awards but he decided not to sign up again as host so here are three exciting stars who will bring plenty of laughter to Madison Square Garden that night. You can bet there will be plenty of surprises during these three hosts raucous evening as there always are with these shows! We can't wait until June 11th 2022 !!!

Best Revival of a Play

Though Broadway veterans like 2019 Best Actress in a Play winner Glenda Jackson and Best Featured Actor in a Play winner Bill Irwin will likely enter awards consideration for their stellar performances, it’s important to remember that The Cherry Orchard is largely Ariana DeBose’s show. However, keep an eye on Patti LuPone, who is expected to win 2019 Best Actress in a Musical for her star turn as Judy Garland in End of The Rainbow. If you're wondering when are the tony awards 2022 , you'll be happy to know that they'll take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 9, 2022. Stay tuned for more information about the Tony Awards 2022 winners & nominees. In other news, Hamilton fans can rejoice knowing that Lin-Manuel Miranda will make his debut as Alexander Hamilton in 2020's West Side Story . It's also worth noting that Harry Potter and The Cursed Child Parts One and Two are still making waves on Broadway. A new season means new shows—and potentially some surprise nominations come time for Tony Awards 2022 voting. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens! Until then, check out our predictions for Tony Awards 2022 below:

Best Revival of a Musical

The Revival of Hello, Dolly!, A Girl Like Me, and The Children's Hour are all competing for Best Revival of a Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards. This year’s Best Revival of a Musical was awarded to My Fair Lady for its Broadway debut, which was directed by Bartlett Sher. Ariana DeBose, who originated one of Mame Dennis’ roles in Loving Repeating: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and created Nora in Unhinged in 2018, is up for two awards. Patti LuPone has been nominated for her role as Madame Morrible in Broadway's Wicked opposite Teal Wicks and Lindsay Mendez. In addition, Lisa Kron will be receiving a special award for writing and directing Well.

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre

The Broadway League announced on May 3, 2019 that it had entered into a multi-year partnership with (who else?) Interscope Records and Roc Nation to bring back its Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre. The awards will now be known as simply, The Tony Awards. As part of their new partnership, which began on June 1, 2019, (and runs through August 31, 2028), interscope records is also producing a compilation album featuring various artists performing nominated songs from various shows (including Ain't Too Proud, performed by Ghost-writer Benj Pasek). Check out Ariana DeBose's song Jai Colores from Brooklyn: The Musical—but be warned: There is some explicit language. Patti LuPone performs her solo show Patti LuPone: Live From Radio City Music Hall. It was filmed at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on October 22, 2018. Best Book of a Musical

Patti LuPone, playing a fictionalized version of herself, received a book nomination for Best Book of a Musical. LuPone has won before, but not as an author. That award went to Glenn Slater and Amanda Green for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, meaning LuPone will face stiff competition from both newcomers and incumbents. One such competitor is Ariana DeBose for King Kong on Broadway—which also earned a nomination in Best Original Score with Marius de Vries, Philip Glass and Eddie Perfect (the latter two veterans). Another woman who could cause issues is The Cher Show composer Chris Miller. But it’s hard to bet against LuPone; she’s won three Tonys overall, so there’s no reason why she can’t win one more. She may be a fierce character onstage, but offstage she remains one of Broadway's most lovable legends. Plus, any show starring her is bound to be good...if only because her snarky personality alone makes her shows worth seeing. Just ask fellow legends Patti Lupone fans like Lin-Manuel Miranda or Sutton Foster; they'll tell you how much they love getting their theater tickets early just so they can enjoy LuPone's offstage antics before curtain call.

The revival garnered two other Tony Awards nominations - Best Revival of a Play and Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Patti LuPone)
